A Summer's Journey

A pretty hat, a favorite magazine and tote bag...

“Travel and change of place impart new vigor to the mind.” ~ Seneca

Summertime. And for us that means it's time to travel. We will be taking our time as we travel up through the mountains of Tennessee and further north to Delaware to visit my family. Staying at various bed and breakfasts along the way. On the journey home we will visit with my husband's family in Kentucky. It is a long journey but the scenery is always lovely, as are the cooler temperatures. There will surely be lots of antique stores and quaint restaurants to seek out along the way.

So for the next two days I'll be ironing and packing and loading up on goodies for the trip. Oh, and playing with my blog and visiting!

I'll be back mid~July.

Around the Cottage

Images from Rose Cottage this past week...

Freshly baked bread

Sipping tea while reading Day~Votions for Grandmothers

One of my favorite paintings in our cottage (from the thrift store) ~

I think it's oil or acrylic ~ I think it's so pretty and I find it a little sad that someone took it to the thrift store ~

and of course...

our little puddin'!

Hope you all have a lovely weekend! I'm off to do the grocery shopping ~

This and That

Before I forget ~ Mara had a question about the temperature to bake the blackberry crumble (from my previous post). Silly me, I knew I forgot to mention something. Anyway, it should be baked at 375. Thanks Mara!

We've been having lots of rain here, so I find myself catching up on indoor projects I've been putting off...

I recently found a pretty white blouse at the thrift store, (Irish linen!) but I could see it needed a few changes. I took off the collar, cut and added lace from a vintage camisole to the sleeves.

I spruced up our laundry room a bit. I figure since I do laundry nearly everyday, I might as well have a pretty area to work in ~ our laundry room is painted with Laura Ashley paint in Rose Cream.

clothespins await in a vintage canning jar

a few favorite aprons hang from the hooks, the basket holds more clothespins. The little heart and embroidered wall hanging were made by me:)

homemade laundry soap, bowl with grater to make more

Making my laundry room pleasant helps puts me in a good frame of mind. Washing clothes for five adults plus a newborn seems less of a chore and makes me feel good about what I do as a Homemaker. A wonderful quote from Winnie the Pooh's Piglet sums it up ~

"Laundry day. And there's nothing better than clothes dried in the sun." ~ Piglet

The skies are once again sunny, so hopefully I can get some clothes hung outside today!

Tea and Crumble

"Flopsy, Mopsy, and Cotton~tail...went down the lane to gather blackberries."
~ Beatrix Potter

Oh boy, our blackberries are beginning to ripen. We love blackberry crumble around here. A simple dessert or afternoon treat ~ delicious with vanilla icecream! We usually have enough berries for a crumble or two then I freeze the rest. I like to save them for crumbles come Thanksgiving time. I should have enough in the next day or so to make one. Nothing like a cup of tea with crumble!

Easy Peasy Blackberry Crumble

3 cups berries
2~3 tbsp sugar
1 tbsp cornstarch

Combine and bake for about 20 minutes

Combine 1/4 cup flour
1/4 cup oatmeal
1/4 cup brown sugar
1/2 tsp cinnamon
3 tbsp of butter

Remove fruit from oven. Sprinkle crumb mixture on top. Bake 15 or so minutes.
My family especially loves the "crumble" part so I tend to double the amount. I've made this using peaches, blueberries and of course blackberries, and sometimes I combine whatever fruit I have on hand.

In other cottage news, I'm learning to play the Strumstick ~ cutest little thing to strum and easy for a beginner like me. I've always loved the sound of guitar (my Mom used to sing to us on hers) and I've long wanted to learn to play an instrument. So far I only know how to strum, but I'm keeping at it. I really want to learn to play an old favorite ~ "Down in the Valley."

Flowers, Babies and Other Things

Ah, yes, the beautiful hydrangeas are blooming!

"I will be the gladdest thing
Under the sun!
I will touch a hundred flowers
And not pick one."
~ Edna St. Vincent Millay

This weekend I made myself a new handbag. I used a vintage tea towel along with some of my bits and bobs of lace. I think I will still need to add a button and little loop on the top to keep it closed. I'll have to rumage through my stash again. Here's a front and back photo ~

and the day wouldn't be complete without a photo of my favorite little fella...
