A Winter Garden

And Spring arose on the garden fair,
Like the Spirit of Love felt everywhere;
And each flower and herb on the Earth’s dark breast
Rose from the dreams of its wintry rest.
~ Percy Shelley

My garden faery looks a bit forlorn amongst the dried leaves...

                                                                 My gazing ball...

I did manage to pick a few sprigs of rosemary and along with a couple of dried roses (from our Christmas tree) to hang in our foyer.  Rosemary (or dew of the sea) is a protective herb, so it's lovely to have in your entry way.

I also made (just for me) a dream pillow filled with dried roses (warmth and love), lavender (soothing and relaxing) and geranium (peace of mind).

Next I thought I'd try my hand at making a facial toner and searced the web and found this recipe...

Green Tea and Rose Facial Toner

Toners help adjust pH levels, remove any residues left on the skin after cleansing, tone and tighten pores, and moisturize. This toner is gentle, soothing, and beneficial for all skin types.

4 oz organic Witch Hazel Extract
2 oz organic Rose Hydrosol
1 TBSP Aloe Vera Gel
1 tsp organic Green Sencha Leaf Tea
1/2 tsp organic Vegetable Glycerine
2-5 drops Rose or organic Geranium (Rose) Essential Oil

First, make an herbal infused Witch Hazel Extract by placing the Green Sencha Tea leaves and Witch Hazel Extract in a glass jar with a tight-fitting lid. Shake the jar daily and allow the mixture to infuse for 2 or more weeks. Once finished infusing, strain the Green Tea leaves out and reserve the remaining liquid. Mix the infused Witch Hazel Extract with all of the other ingredients, and pour into dark glass bottles.
This recipe is from The Mountain Rose Blog . I've adjusted it a bit, since I didn't have that particular green tea, but used what I had on hand.

The weather here on the Gulf Coast has been truly lovely (although a bit chilly),  but I know we will soon be in for more Wintery weather.  Those are the days I stay inside and dabble  in whatever dried herbs and flowers I have from the previous Summer.

I'm taking an online course in keeping a Nature Journal which I'm really enjoying. I'm trying to make a deeper connection to the world around me, even if it's only in my backyard!

Faery Wings and Other Things

"In the depths of winter I finally learned that within me there lay an invincible summer." ~ Albert Camus

Yes, My garden is sleeping, but there is still magic beneath the ground. The weather has turned warmer, and my thoughts turn to what else? ~ my garden! I can almost smell the climbing roses and jasmine as I meander through some seed and rose catalogs. This is the time of year I always find myself plannng my faery garden. Right now I could use a bit of faery dust to pull me out of the Winter doldrums. I tend to get a little out of sorts when I let myself become boring! Does that make sense? I need a little enchantment in my life at all times. I think I still look at the world through a child's eyes...maybe that's why I've always loved The Secret Garden and Peter Pan. I think Frances Hodgson Burnett and James Barrie must have been a lot like that ~

Anyway...

Loving my winter boots (Christmas present) ~ notice I haven't given up wearing my skirts. In fact, I'm already tired of wearing jeans. Nice for a change, but I'm so much more comfortable wearing skirts. And who's idea was it to add blasted spandex to jeans? I can barely keep them up. They fit great straight from the dryer, but after an hour or two they begin to sag and I find myself constantly pulling them up. How attractive that must look, eh?

It probably didn't help when I saw (Oh,be still my heart) some of the new Magnolia Pearl Collection...

I just love their messy, cool hair. I want my hair like that!

I'm going to spend some time this weekend being creative ~ be it clothing, in the garden or baking. Maybe a little of each! You might even find me spilling a bit of that faery dust!

Until next time ~

Inspiration

I've been in need of a little spiritual encouragement lately ~ I don't have a lot of time during the day for "quiet time." I just get caught up in taking care of our grandbaby and during the afternoons I'm doing chores and working in the kitchen. I know, not very good excuses for not making the time for reflection and prayer. Well, anyway I came across the prettiest blog with all sorts of lovely inspirational graphics ~ Little Birdie Blessings. I'm going to create myself a little prayer journal using some of these pretty graphics. It doesn't sound like much, but I think that will get me started in the right direction.

Have a wonderful Sunday

Uh~Oh

pretty bird ~ but not in my backyard!!!

Look what we saw this morning lurking around the chicken coop. I've locked up the girls in their run which they will stay! They're not super happy, but the husband will be expanding their run this weekend, so they will have more room to do whatever it is that chickens do...

He (she?) looks kinda hungry

This sucker was BIG and not intimidated at all. I was waving a trash can lid around, and it actually bomb dived me.

Pretty Little Things

Since I started "pinning" styles I would like to try on Pinterest I've discovered a few things about my fashion preferences. I like to mix pink with gray as well as black. I also really love the colors turquoise, blue and lavender. I'm going to try and incorporate these colors into my wardrobe ~ on a budget of course!
I've found a few pretty things as the thrift store to spruce up my outfits. A purse in the perfect shade of pink, a blue ruffly tank top and a lacey scarf.

I don't feel I've given up my femininity by wearing jeans, rather I feel a sense of freedom by not trying to pin myself down to a certain look. And to be honest, I was getting tired of wearing skirts especially while cleaning out the chicken coop and working in the garden!
I am lovin' my jeans! It has taken me a long time to find some that fit well. I wear a 4, and I found I had to pay a bit extra for ones that fit around my waist (which is small) and my hips (which are large in proportion).
Sorry for the blurry photos. I was having one of those bad camera days.

closeup of the buttons ~ sparkly and very pretty!

excuse the mess behind me...a baby swing and my sewing stuff seems to have exploded on the floor.

I can't wait until tonight ~ season 3 of Downton Abbey begins! I've got the wine chilling and the crackers and cheese, dip and veggies just ready for snackin'! Maybe tomorrow I'll show my new lace blouse ~ I refer to it as my Downton Abbey blouse!
