Baby Chicks and Lazy Days

We brought our new chicks home yesterday.  What a cute bunch.  It will be awhile before we know if there's any roosters.  We know someone who will take them off our hands if need be.  In the meantime they will get lots of care and cuddles.  I don't want to name any of them yet until we are sure who is who, although I'm a bit partial to one of the light orange ones I can't help but call Buttercup.  Other names in the running are Lily, Violet and Blossom.  There are seven all together, so I think we will be lucky if we get 3 maybe 4 hens out of the bunch.
Today I'll be planting a few more tomatoes, eggplants and radishes. I bought some strawberry plants and begonias that were 50% off at Lowes  ~ just slightly wilted, hopefully will bounce back once in the ground.  After gardening I plan on relaxing!  I'm going to sit outside and read for a bit. I'm making an easy dinner of sauerkraut and hot dogs with fresh strawberries for dessert.
Tomorrow we are in for lots of rain, which calls for a slow cooking dinner (a roast perhaps?) and the day spent lounging about with lovely pots of tea and good books.
Have a pleasant weekend!

Gentle Days

"I believe the nicest and sweetest days are not those on which anything very splendid or wonderful or exciting happens but just those that bring simple little pleasures, following one another softly, like pearls slipping off a string.”
~ L.M. Montgomery
Pretty little dress I picked up last year (on sale)from April Cornell.

added the pin for fun...
Today is one of those days I feel like I'm  not getting much done.  Add to that a bit of a fussy, teething baby and you have the makes of one of those "oh well" days.  I like to refer to times like these as my "gentle days."  No, I might not get much done, but I do have time to sit quiet and rock  my wee grandson.  And really, what could be sweeter than cuddling a baby?
All is good...still managed to get the clothes hung outside and put a meatloaf in the crockpot for dinner.  Right now grandbaby is taking a much needed nap, so I have a few moments to myself.  Life is so busy just doing everyday things, laundry, cooking, homemaking.  But I wouldn't have it any other way.

A Spring Weekend

"And Spring arose on the garden fair,
Like the Spirit of Love felt everywhere;
And each flower and herb on Earth's dark breast
rose from the dreams of its wintry rest."
       ~ Percy Bysshe Shelley
Love this photo ~ can't remember where it's from

I had a lovely weekend, spent here at the cottage, doing a bit of this and that.

I made some laundry detergent and baked 2 loaves of french bread.  I worked on a  small afghan I'm attempting to crochet. It has become my evening project, so if the tv is on I have something to do.  I  just can't sit staring at the television ~ my hands have to be busy.

My husband bought a 50 gallon rain barrel which he hopes to set up in a few days. We hope this will offset higher water bills that we would use for the garden.

We are planning to add two or three chickens to our "flock" ~ Ameraucanas which lay the pretty blue and green eggs.

I've been doing a bit of weeding and planted a few flowers ~ allysum, marigolds, petunias and violas.  I also planted some zinnia seeds I saved from last years flowers.

My Mother~in~Law sent us her pressure cooker, we are hoping to have enough veggies to can this summer.

I found some gently used baby toys at a recent yard sale.  I'm putting these away for our grandbaby's 1st birthday next month.  Has it been a year already??

                                                  Hope your day is pleasant!

Spring Things

"The roofs are shining from the rain,
The sparrows twitter as they fly,
And with a windy April grace
The little clouds go by.
Yet the back yards are bare and brown
With only one unchanging tree--
I could not be so sure of Spring
Save that it sings in me."
~  Sara Teasdale
Our little garden is starting to grow!

green beans

tomatoes, squash, peppers, cantaloupe, more green beans ~ we plant what we know we'll eat.

  and potatoes!

Hope everything is going well in your corner of the world.  I notice that google reader will no longer be available and that there is now something called Bloglovin.  I don't care much for it, but then I don't like all the changes that blogger has made over the years.

Other things happening here...just donated a lot of china, doilies and tablecloths to goodwill as long as clothing (mostly the kids) and other knick~knacks.  I can now open my china hutch and not have things falling over.  I decided to only keep what I truly love ~

I've also decided to quit beating myself up if I'm not doing everything I think I should be doing.  For instance, I love making soap but I don't like using it on my face. My husband loves it, but I find it too drying.  So I stick to my long time favorite pink Dove.  Somehow that makes me feel less of a frugal, homesteading wanna~be!  So I'm easing up on things like that as well as keeping a few cans of Prego soup and a cake mix or two on the shelf for those times I don't quite feel like making everything from scratch.

I've found that at this season of my life being a grandma, taking care of a 10 month old during the week, caring for the chickens, garden and homekeeping is enough to keep me busy.

I know I don't blog much, not nearly as much as I did years ago, I can't seem to think of anything interesting to write about!  I'm going to try and post a bit more often.

I  joined facebook a few months ago (to keep up with nieces and nephews), but I think I'll be backing away from that and just stick to my blog.  I thought if I don't log into it for the month of April then I'll deactivate my account. I also got rid of pintrest ~lots of nice things to "pin" but I find myself pinning too many things I wish I had or could make instead of actually trying it myself.

Well, that's it fo now!  I hope you are all enjoying a lovely April day.  It's raining here  ~ much needed for the garden, but it makes me achy!!
