Is it Too Early?

"God gave us our memories, so that we might have roses in December.
~ J.M. Barrie

I've been making Christmas ornaments for our tree.  I know it's not quite October, but I was in the mood to do something crafty.  Our little grandson is nearly 2 1/2 - just the right age to pull things off the tree.  So of course I want things he can touch!  This year I'm going back to my roses theme, I enjoyed last years tree, but I really missed my pink and roses.

Yesterday my husband and I celebrated our 29th Anniversary.  We had a quiet celebration at home with homemade pizza and a movie.

Look what I found at the thrift store this weekend.  I've been pinning for a new fall blazer, but "new" is way out of my prize range.  This is an Ann Taylor in just the right colors and size and looks barely worn.  For the $6.00 I paid I couldn't be more pleased.

Its a bit gloomy today so for dinner I'm making a pot of vegetarian chili.  I just pulled this loaf of bread out of the oven, so I think tea and toast for an afternoon snack will be in order.

Well, my grandson will be here any moment.
So until next time...

Welcoming Autumn

"Winter is an etching, spring a watercolor, summer an oil paintingand autumn a mosaic of them all."
-   Stanley Horowitz

We have been experiencing some lovely weather here at Rose cottage I simply love this time of year!

,This picture is from a photo I took of my childhood home.  I fiddled with it in an app called Waterlogue.

Latest library book I've been reading.

I've also been enjoying these yummy pumpkin spice donut holes. I saw these on Brenda's lovely blog Coffee Tea Books and Me.  The recipe is from a blog called Step in the journey. Sorry I don't have a link but I'm writing this on my iPad and I don't know how to make it work.

Well, I'm off to do a bit of housework before the grandbaby arrives,  Have a great day.

This and That

"By all these lovely tokens
September days are here,
With summer’s best of weather
And autumn’s best of cheer."

Things to do this week include making another batch of laundry detergent, baking loaves of wheat and French bread and baking some oatmeal butterscotch cookies.  Friday is grocery shopping day, so I've been going through the pantry while working on my list.

I woke up with a headache this morning, so I got through my chores as quick as possible.  My grandson is coming a bit later today,  so that's giving me time to eat a leisurely lunch which I hope will cure my aching head.

I hope you all have a pleasant day.

Routines

"I believe that the nicest and sweetest of days are not those which anything very splendid or wonderful or exciting happens, but just those that bring simple little pleasures, following one another softly, like pearls slipping off a string."
  Anne of Green Gables

My day to day routines are pretty much the same.  I wake up early~ish  around 6:00 (5:00 ~ 5:30 in the early summer)  get dressed and go out and feed the chickens. Most days I'll start a load of laundry, then I take my walk. In this heat I walk about 3.5 miles in the winter 4.5.  When I come home I have breakfast, feed the dogs and cat.  I hang any laundry outside, if its raining we have an indoor clothesline in our laundry room.  However, if its muggy outside the clothes just won't dry so I resort to the dryer.

My guilty pleasure is spending some time reading blogs and other favorite websites where I often glean money saving tips.  Next, I shower, get dressed and then on to other household tasks. I sometimes bake something, or do prep for whatever I'm making for dinner.  My Grandson is dropped off around 11:00, so I do a quick run through of the cottage to make sure baby gates are in place and anything his little hands might pull down are put away.  I also check on our girls,, to see if there are any eggs and make sure their water is nice and cold. I have our grandson here 5 days a week until about 4:00 or 4:30, so my afternoons are well spent. After he goes home I start to make dinner and then of course there is clean up time and locking up the chickens for the night.  Most evenings I spend reading or watching a show on Acorn tv, That is my new favorite, its all British programs. Right now I'm enjoying the last season of Poirot.

I have found as the years roll by, I like my days to run as gently as possible. Once every two weeks my husband and I go grocery shopping and I'll make an occasional trip to the thrift store, library and maybe Target ( can't stand walmart).  but for the most part I'm home where I like to be.  I don't think I'm a hermit, I just know what I like. I just turned 53 in August, so by now I should know what suits me best!  By the way, my husband bought me this beautiful robe (or dressing gown) from April Cornell for my birthday.  I think its just lovley!

Have a lovely weekend!

Back to Basics

"'Tis the last rose of summer,
Left blooming alone;
All her lovely companions
Are faded and gone."
 ~ Thomas Moore

I'm so happy it's September!  Such a lovely month, and with Autumn just around the corner things couldn't be better.
This morning I spent some time in what's left of my flower garden pulling the last sad blooms.  I'm making way to begin our fall garden of lettuces, onions, carrots, spinach and bush beans.

Last month I mentioned I was using more expensive skincare.  Well, after I used up the cream I decided to stick with my homemade rose soap (and sometimes Dove bar) along with rosehip oil to moisturizer.  Seems my skin is happier and it's a whole lot less expensive!

Our little chickens have started to lay eggs!  Although some are not so little anymore.  I'm hoping to start selling some eggs as soon as they become more regular.

I changed out my "summery" china for my pretty blue and white collection.  Most of these pieces belonged to my Mom, the rest I picked up here an there.

A few photos of what we've canned so far...potatoes, beans, tomatoes, strawberry jam and we are just starting on apples.

I hope you all have a lovely day.  My grandson will be here soon for me to babysit while my daughter  attends classes.  She and baby moved to an apartment with here fiancĂ©' ~ a very nice young man.  Is it bad that I enjoy having some peace during the day?  Having a very active toddler living with us was a lot to handle.  We are happy our daughter has found someone who loves her and her son!

Until next time...
